Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter of their family. At the age of five the carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. However, she left school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was filled with difficulties. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she was unable to get work for stage. She then worked as an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. It was there that she earned a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
